Parent and family support is essential to the well-being of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities and Rotherham Parent Carers Forum recognises this.
Whilst much is known about the difficulties and challenges parents with a disabled child face, and what parents want for their children, very little is known about how parents want their own lives to be and an important area of our work is to promote the emotional wellbeing of our families, this includes parents and carers, siblings as well as the children and young people who have additional needs themselves.
We know from our years of working with families that parents’ desired outcomes are as follows:
-
maintaining or enhancing their personal identity, their physical and emotional well-being, and their skill and knowledge base
-
desire for a better balance between their caring and parenting roles
-
family-level outcomes including maintaining family life and ensuring the positive adjustment of siblings
-
sufficient practical and financial resources to meet the needs of their disabled child and the rest of their family
-
to feel confident about the services they are using and to know that practitioners are working in partnership with them
We are trying to help to ensure these outcomes are achieved by continuing to work in partnership with local service providers and commissioners and ensuring that our families have a voice, by offering advice and support to ensure our families are equipped with the knowledge they need to meet the needs of their children and more recently, by offering the following services to ensure our families have access to practical support:
