Young Co-Producers Call Out - Rotherham Show 2019
14th June 2019
ROTHERHAM VOICE AND INFLUENCE PARTNERSHIP- VIP
Supported by the Children, Young People and Families Consortium.
REQUEST FORM
Consultation and co-production with Children, Young People and Families through the Voluntary and Community Sector.
- Our purpose is to strengthen the voice of the child in systems and processes that can impact on their lives and those of their families, specifically, but not exclusively, regarding the planning and delivery of services.
- As a collaboration between the statutory and voluntary sector the VIP aims to promote and share good practice, while ensuring ethical safeguarding standards.
- By involving young people and families in the design and delivery of services we can get it right first time by asking the “right people the right questions at the right time”. It is important that young people and families remain part of “all our thinking all of the time.”
- This template enables the partnership to help you reach the right groups of people to inform your enquiry, while considering best practice and the young people and families’ motivations for taking part.
Please complete and submit the form at the earliest opportunity as our meetings are 6 weekly. Teresa Brocklehurst : teresa.brocklehurst@cypfconsortium.org.uk

Purpose of request
To work with 15 young people to co-curate the Children’s Capital of Culture Zone at this year’s Rotherham Show.
The zone will bring high quality artistic programming to the show as it marks its 40th anniversary and provide an opportunity to test a different approach to programming the children and young people’s offer at the event whilst raising the quality of the experience for younger audiences and their families. As part of the weekend of activities RMBC will be launching the Children’s Capital of Culture initiative acting as an open invitation for children and young people to work with the partners and stakeholders from across the borough to co-produce a spectacular year of culture and celebration of young people in 2025.
RMBC are looking for 15 young people to volunteer as a part of a programme steering group for the Children’s Capital of Culture Zone for Rotherham Show 2019. The group will be supported by a Creative Producer and other creative and cultural partners across the region to co-curate this area of the show selecting the activities, productions and artists who will bring this area of the show to life. In addition the group will work with partners to co-produce a ‘launch’ of the initiative which will act as a call to arms, inviting children and young people from across the borough to co-produce this exciting new concept.
This is a time limited project in co-curation rather than co-production and represents a time commitment of 10 days spread across two months leading up to the show.
This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants:
· To gain experience of event management
· To gain an understanding of artistic programming including the curation and installation of arts and cultural events
· To gain an understanding of the developing Children’s Capital of Culture concept

Why do you seek children, young people or families’ involvement?
The ambition is to entirely co-produce the Children’s Capital of Culture concept from the development of its vision and programming themes to its delivery in 2025. A Creative Producer is being appointed to kick start this process with a brief to work with children and young people from the outset.
Rotherham Show has an ambition to move towards a model of co-production and its 40th anniversary show offers an opportunity to test this on a small scale.
Whilst we appreciate that true co-production takes a lot of time and continued commitment, and is a process rather than a project, we want to ensure that both Rotherham Show and the Children’s Capital of Culture initiative have an element of children and young people’s influence even when timescales are short and are therefore seeking young partners to act as a co-curation team in this instance.
Are there any particular geographical communities or communities of interest that you are keen to involve ?
A draft Audience Development Plan has been created for Rotherham Show (see attached) which identifies four key target audiences as follows:
- BAME communities who live closest to the Show ground. This is particularly important as we work to celebrate the contribution of people with different ethnic and faith backgrounds and deliver the Creative Case for Diversity.
- Traditional white, working class communities, particularly residents of social housing in Canklow, Maltby, Dinnington, Swinton, Wath and people in the outlying towns of the borough who are less likely to engage with cultural activities.
- Young people between the ages of 8 and 25 years old. This audience represents our future artists and audiences and are central to development and delivery of our ambition to be Children’s Capital of Culture in 2025.
- Traditional arts audiences in South Yorkshire. These people don’t currently attend the show in significant numbers, however in order to make the Show more financially viable and to encourage perception-change about Rotherham, we wish to challenge perceptions of the cultural offer here and build a relationship with existing arts audiences.
We would ideally like to build relationships with young people across these target audiences for Rotherham Show.
What will be the follow up/feedback to individuals and group involvement including timescales?
An evaluation of the show will be taking place with information collated and analysed and a report due by the end of the year.
An initial debrief and follow up with the young people taking part will be scheduled for the weeks immediately after the show, the results of which will be included in the evaluation report. The final report will be shared with all participants and used to inform how Rotherham Show can move towards a model of co-production.
What incentives are there for children/young people/families to get involved that recognise and value their input?
We are seeking a group of young people who will act as decision makers. We are not seeking views/opinions that will be listened to by adults who make the decisions but are placing children and young people in the driving seat as the curators and decision makers for this area of artistic programming.
Whilst we cannot offer payment for this project we can offer full references for any of the young co-producer looking to pursue a career in the arts.
How will the involvement of children/young people/families make a difference to planning and decision making? Who will be better off as a result?
We believe that children and young people know best what appeals to their age group and demographic. By appointing a team of young co-producers supported by a Creative Producer we believe that the programming of and experience of Rotherham Show can be improved for children and young people, creating a safer and more inspiring event for children and young people across the borough to enjoy.
In addition this project sets the tone for the Children’s Capital of Culture initiative and the future direction of Rotherham Show ensuring that, long-term, children and young people are at the heart of cultural decision making and delivery.

Has this template changed the way you are thinking about the proposal?
No, but would welcome any feedback on our proposal.

THANK YOU
