Bereavement Support Group - Crossroads Care
7th March 2023

To attend the group (ex) carers will need to have been referred, (or self refer) spoken with me before a start date for attending the group given. (Sadly people cannot just drop in)
Below is some useful information regarding the group.
What is the purpose of the group?
The bereavement support group is aimed at unpaid carers who live in Rotherham. Sharing
experiences allows (ex) carers to give each other support, and to exchange practical information and ways of coping. It also allows (ex) carers to understand themselves better through the insights of others. Often when the caring role comes to an end, there is a need for continued support as (ex) carers often feel depressed, anxious, physically and emotionally exhausted when the person they care for goes into fulltime care or reaches end of life.
Who can participate in the group?
- Carers whose caring role is coming, or has come to an end due to their cared for person going into fulltime care or reaching the end of life. This period in their caring journey has been identified as a crucial point for (ex) carers, the support they receive at this point will shape their future and help them come to terms with their loss. Help to reconnect with their family, friends and community, with a view to start and build a better life following the end of their caring role.
- We will also consider referrals for (ex) carers whose caring role has ended within the last 12 months and are struggling with the transition of the caring role ending.
Structure of Groups
Groups are very informal and are about planning for the future, learning/sharing ideas of the importance of planning ahead and preparing, both emotionally and practically in an environment and with an organisation (ex) carers can trust and feel comfortable with. Providing professional & peer led practical/emotional support for carers experiencing transition/death/loss/bereavement through peer support, information, signposting, workshops, counselling and activities.
Location
CROSSROADS CARE ROTHERHAM
How often will the group meet?
Groups will be every Tuesday Afternoon by appointment only (although day may be subject to change)
Do I need to be referred, or can I just walk in?
To attend the group you need to be an (ex) carer, living in Rotherham. You will need to contact Crossroads Care Rotherham office (01709 360272) who will then put you in contact with the group facilitator. You can also be referred by a professional if they have your consent.
What will I gain from attending the group?
Our aim is to support (ex) carers with the grieving process and to offer/navigate support through the tough period of loss. It is hoped that (ex) carers engaging with the bereavement support group will report feeling more confident to face the future, better equipped and more resilient to face what lay ahead, whether this is a difficult decisions around end of life care, or life beyond their caring role. It is also hoped that, with support (ex) carers can move on and re establish relationships with family, friends and local community, as well as an opportunity to make new friends.
